Tips for Driving Safely Through Fog in Clearwater

August 27, 2017 Leave a Comment

When driving early in the morning, or through the mountains, it can be common to run into dense patches of fog. In these times, it is important to take the proper safety measures to protect both yourself and other drivers on the road. Some of these tips are common sense, while others are a little counter-intuitive. By following these three easy steps, drivers can significantly decrease their chances of an accident while driving through foggy weather. Contact a distinguished car accident attorney to learn more about prevention and how to handle the dangers of certain weather conditions.

Slow Down

Everyone has their places to be and appointments to keep, but posted speed limits are placed as a guide to safe driving in perfect weather conditions. When there is fog on the road, the conditions are far from perfect. When driving through fog, just like driving through rain or snow, drivers should go only as fast as is reasonable and safe. This will give them more time to react in case of an emergency.

Keep Headlights on “Low”

Despite what logic may tell a person, the less light a driver can throw into the fog the better. While regular headlights will serve to let other drivers know that the vehicle is there, high-beams will scatter their light throughout the fog and actually decrease the distance that a driver can see. It may also create illusions for drivers coming from the other direction, not letting them quickly locate a car. The strange rule here is, “the less light a driver uses while still being able to see, the better.”

Do Not Get Distracted

It is easy to lose concentration while driving. Maybe a favorite song is on the radio, or a long-lost friend calls. While these can serve as welcome entertainment during long drives, the fact of the matter is that they diminish a driver’s ability to safely operate their vehicle. By turning the radio off, ignoring that phone call, or even by placing two hands on the wheel, a driver will increase their alertness and lessen the chance of an accident. Driving through fog, while difficult, does not need to be a stressful experience. By driving at a safe speed, keeping your lights on low, and concentrating, you can help to lessen your chance of an accident.
