Rise in Auto Accidents Around Tampa Bay

According to Forward Pinellas, new numbers show that fatal crashes in Pinellas County have almost doubled in the first several months of 2021 when compared with the same time period last year. The transportation planning organization states that there were 78 deaths between January and June this year, while 2020 saw 53 deaths from auto accidents last year. Forward Pinellas director Whit Blanton also said that the vast majority of these deaths involve people who were walking or biking.

Just this June, two individuals lost their lives, and another one sustained injuries in a fatal auto accident near the International Plaza. According to the police, a Jeep traveling westbound on Boyscout Boulevard hit a Nissan Frontier that was crossing Boyscout Boulevard and traveling Manhattan Avenue. The Frontier’s passenger and driver were killed due to the negligent actions of the Jeep driver, who only suffered serious, non-fatal injuries.

Additionally, in July, four individuals were killed when they got struck by a car as they were fixing a flat tire. The fatal accident occurred just before 10 pm near Fruitville Road on the I-75 southbound lanes. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), seven good Samaritans got out of their vehicle to help another motorist in need. They were standing on the highway’s shoulder when an oncoming car hit them. Four of the good Samaritans died because of another driver’s reckless and negligent actions.

A similar trend is happening across the bay. The Hillsborough County Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) also reports that there have been 122 deadly auto accidents in 2021. Also, the FHP found that overall motor vehicle crashes have increased by 52% this 2021, and deadly crashes have increased by 13%.

Recovering Compensation for Reckless Driving Victims

We’ve all shared the road with reckless drivers—those that drive too fast, tailgated, or ignored stop signs and red lights, among others. These actions could easily result in devastating injuries and fatal traffic crashes. Injured victims of accidents resulting from reckless driving deserve fair compensation for the damages they have incurred due to their injuries, such as:

  • Medical expenses for treating injuries resulting from the reckless driving accident, including emergency care, medications, hospital stays, therapy, long-term care, surgery, and/or medical equipment, etc.
  • Future and past lost wages if the injured victim missed work and/or is unable to go back to work because of the effects of the injuries.
  • Non-medical expenses incurred by the victim, which can include expenses for replacing or replacing their vehicle or for hiring services to help them with daily tasks such as household chores, childcare, transportation, etc.
  • Emotional distress, pain and suffering, loss of companionship, and other psychological and mental side effects of the accident
